It’s official! Microsoft will release Windows 8 on October 26, 2012. Microsoft had earlier stated that Win8 will be available in late October. There’s an official date now. Those with Windows 7 PCs would be able to upgrade to Windows 8 and it will also be available on new PCs. Users running Windows XP, Vista or Win7 would be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $40, provided your PC meets the minimum system requirements.

The release date is like 2 months and one week from now. Oct 26 is Friday, so you will get a weekend to get your hands on Microsoft’s latest OS. To date, Microsoft has released 2 trial versions of Win8. A Consumer Preview release that was meant for developers and a Release Preview version that was the ‘public beta’ of the OS.

It’s not clear yet if the ARM version of Windows 8 will also be available on same date. However, 32 bit and 64 bit PCs will get the update. Windows 8 brings Microsoft Metro user interface to the desktop PCs, which was initially introduced in Windows Phone 7. There have been mixed reviews for Metro on desktop computers as its typically designed for touchscreen devices and users may have to spend some time to get familiar with it.

Looking forward to download Windows 8 for your PCs? The clock is ticking, stay tuned!
